Leadership - 6

These two books “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win” by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin and “How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk” by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish taught me leadership lessons.

Leadership is all about planning carefully, building teams, communicating properly, praising loudly, blaming softly, listening & understanding, having faith in people, taking difficult decisions, learning from people, embracing changes, and planning your own succession.

Leadership is having a Desire of wanting, a Vision of the big picture, Persistence that makes you attack again & again, and the Guts to go forward anyway.

Takeaways from the book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win.

  • A leader who takes responsibility for failure is vital to the success of a team.

  • Pressure is inevitable as a leader, remaining calm and effective comes from establishing priorities and taking action.

  • Managing risks before they pop up is a key attribute of great leaders.

Takeaways from the book How to Talk so kids will Listen and Listen so kids will Talk.

  • Leadership is all about “Parenting.” The process of living or working with others is demanding and exhausting. It requires heart, intelligence, and stamina.

  • Help followers deal with their feelings. Listen with full attention, instead of half-listening, do acknowledge the feelings.

  • Encourage the autonomy of the followers. Give a choice, get a view, list out all ideas without evaluating, and ask to evaluate which plan to follow.

  • Opinion on the followers to be structured. Describe what you see and what you feel, and sum up the opinion with a word.

  • Free followers from playing roles. Put followers in situations where they can see themselves differently. When your follower acts according to the old label, state your feeling and/or your expectations.
